Greenhouse gases are crucial to keeping our planet at a habitable temperature. The greenhouse effect: some of the infrared radiation passes through the atmosphere, but most is absorbed and re-emitted in all directions by greenhouse gas molecules and clouds. A greenhouse gas is so called because it absorbs infrared radiation in the form of heat, which is circulated in the atmosphere and eventually lost to space. Greenhouse gases also increase the rate at which the atmosphere can absorb short-wave radiation from the sun, but this has a much weaker effect on global temperatures. The contribution that a greenhouse gas makes to the greenhouse effect depends on how much heat it absorbs, how much it re-radiates and how much of it is in the atmosphere.

What is the difference between global warming and climate change?

About 1. This is not only harmful to the environment; it can also lead to premature deaths for millions of people, especially women and children. By , global energy demand is projected to grow by more than 50 percent, and even faster in developing countries. All these new consumers need clean energy that will not hurt them or the environment. Climate change affects virtually all natural and economic systems.

NASA is a world leader in climate studies and Earth science. While its role is not to set climate policy or prescribe particular responses or solutions to climate change, its purview does include providing the robust scientific data needed to understand climate change. NASA then makes this information available to the global community — the public, policy- and decision-makers and scientific and planning agencies around the world. Climate change is one of the most complex issues facing us today. It involves many dimensions — science, economics, society, politics and moral and ethical questions — and is a global problem, felt on local scales, that will be around for decades and centuries to come. Carbon dioxide, the heat-trapping greenhouse gas that has driven recent global warming, lingers in the atmosphere for hundreds of years, and the planet especially the oceans takes a while to respond to warming.

This activity by the Royal Society of Chemistry looks at the greenhouse gas effect on climate change taking into account the increase in temperature and carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. Also included is a study of some of the other gases which contribute to the greenhouse effect and a description of how molecules interact with radiation. This lesson should take about four hours of class time. It includes material for lectures about climate change and greenhouse gases, including descriptions and figures. The greenhouse effect and global warming This PDF covers the greenhouse effect from a chemical perspective by looking at how molecules interact with IR radiation.

CAMEL Climate Change Education

The threat of global climate change promises to be the single most pressing environmental issue as the world enters the 21st Century. Increasingly, it becomes incumbent upon decision-makers from a wide array of backgrounds to gain a sound understanding of the fundamentals of the climate change issue and how it relates to their areas of responsibility. The purpose of this chapter is to review the main elements of the climate change problem and the implications for Bangladesh in order to highlight the key scientific and policy issues involved. This is accomplished by addressing seven main questions: How has climate changed and why? How is the composition of the atmosphere changing? Have variations in greenhouse gases caused climate to change? How might the global climate change in the future?
