In the present study, we have investigated the effect of post-welding heat treatment PWHT of quenching and tempering QT on the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded boron steel joints processed using laser-arc hybrid welding on two commercial filler materials, SM80 Type-I and ZH Type-II. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld joints were characterized via optical microscopy, Vickers microhardness, and the uniaxial tensile test. As a result, the QT specimens revealed the premature fracture with little reduction in the area at the interface between the HAZ and FZ, while the as-welded specimen exhibited the local necking and rupture in the BMZ. In addition, the Type-II filler material with a greater value of equivalent carbon content was rarely influenced by the tempering, maintaining its hardness in the as-quenched status, while the Type-I filler material showed a gradual decrease in hardness with the tempering time. The results demonstrate that the Type-II weld joint outperformed the Type-I weld joint in terms of the structural integrity of welded parts. Boron steel is one of the most widely used alloys for fabricating automotive components because of its good mechanical properties, welding performance, and hardenability [ 1 ].
Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)
In this paper, the liquation cracking and strain-age cracking behavior of nickel-based GTD superalloy which is welded by Nd:YAG pulse laser through several heat treatment cycles, has been studied. Investigations on the hardness of the base metal showed that there was a direct relationship between hardness of the base metal and crack length. Post Weld Heat Treatment PWHT , or stress relief as it is sometimes known, is a method for reducing and redistributing the residual stresses in the material that have been introduced by welding. The extent of relaxation of the residual stresses depends on the material type and composition, the temperature of PWHT and the soaking time at that temperature. A commonly used guideline for PWHT is that the joint should be soaked at peak temperature for 1 hour for each 25mm 1 inch of thickness, although for certain cases a minimum soak time will be specified. In addition to reduction and redistribution of residual stresses during the welding process, PWHT at higher temperatures permits some tempering, precipitation or ageing effects to occur. These metallurgical changes can reduce the hardness of the as-welded structure, improving ductility and reducing the risks of brittle fracture.

Post weld heat treatment PWHT is a controlled process in which a material that has been welded is reheated to a temperature below its lower critical transformation temperature, and then it is held at that temperature for a specified amount of time. The need for PWHT is mostly due to the residual stresses and micro-structural changes that occur after welding has been completed. As the weld cools, residual stress is formed. Therefore, the part is heated to a specified temperature for a given amount of time to reduce these stresses to an acceptable level. The use of PWHT can help reduce any increased hardness levels and improve toughness and ductility to levels acceptable for design.
