Ppt Classification Nomenclature and Isomerism

Ideally, every possible organic compound should have a name from which an unambiguous structural formula can be created. To avoid long and tedious names in normal communication, the official IUPAC naming recommendations are not always followed in practice, except when it is necessary to give an unambiguous and absolute definition to a compound. IUPAC names can sometimes be simpler than older names, as with ethanol, instead of ethyl alcohol. For relatively simple molecules they can be more easily understood than non-systematic names, which must be learnt or looked over. However, the common or trivial name is often substantially shorter and clearer, and so preferred. These non-systematic names are often derived from an original source of the compound. Also, very long names may be less clear than structural formula.

Structure and classification of alcohols

Chemistry branch of science which deals with synthesis and applications of wide variety of compounds. Hydrocarbon compounds which finds huge applications because of unique properties of carbon. Use of organic compounds in introduce to the student from school level. At early age they are directly introduce to the names of compounds. Gradually they learn methods and rules for nomenclature of organic compounds.

IUPAC nomenclature of organic chemistry

Organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry that studies the structure, properties and reactions of organic compounds , which contain carbon in covalent bonding. Study of properties includes physical and chemical properties , and evaluation of chemical reactivity to understand their behavior. The study of organic reactions includes the chemical synthesis of natural products , drugs , and polymers , and study of individual organic molecules in the laboratory and via theoretical in silico study. The range of chemicals studied in organic chemistry includes hydrocarbons compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen as well as compounds based on carbon, but also containing other elements, [1] [2] [3] especially oxygen , nitrogen , sulfur , phosphorus included in many biochemicals and the halogens. Organometallic chemistry is the study of compounds containing carbon— metal bonds.

Similar to water, an alcohol can be pictured as having an s p 3 hybridized tetrahedral oxygen atom with nonbonding pairs of electrons occupying two of the four s p 3 hybrid orbitals. See chemical bonding for a discussion of hybrid orbitals. For example, the One way of classifying alcohols is based on which carbon atom is bonded to the hydroxyl group. As with other types of organic compounds, alcohols are named by both formal and common systems.
