They may be for simple rectification of a signal; they may be used as power diodes for power rectification, signal detection, various forms of RF design, light generation, laser light generation, light detection and much more. The diodes may also have a variety of different packages: surface mount diodes, normal wire leaded diodes, and some power diodes may even have the capability of being bolted to a heatsink.
