Glycoproteins are found on the surface of the lipid bilayer of cell membranes. T he two structures are clearly endobj The oligosaccharide chains of glycoproteins are chemical markers used to tag proteins destined to be used outside the cell. In accordance with the proposal of Reeves et al. W l, W4, W6 and W7. T h e fact that they are crystalline in vivo, indeed share antigenic determinants. Our present view is that there are some glycoproteins very loosely vacuole to diffuse into the plasma membrane surrounding the base of the flagella.

Glycoprotein hormones GPHs are the most complex molecules with hormonal activity. They include three pituitary hormones, the gonadotropins follicle-stimulating hormone FSH; follitropin and luteinizing hormone LH; lutropin as well as thyroid-stimulating hormone TSH; thyrotropin 1. Only in primates 2 and equidaes 3 , a chorionic gonadotropin CG is also secreted by the placenta. The GPHs exist only in vertebrates and appeared during evolution along with the pituitary. Nevertheless, genes coding for molecules related to GPHs subunits were identified in all vertebrates studied and in most invertebrates 4 — 6. The gonadotropins FSH and LH play a central role in vertebrate reproductive function 7 , 8 as they convey the integrated central information from the hypothalamic—pituitary complex toward gonads in both males and females. Indeed, internal mainly endocrine and external photoperiod, congeners information are integrated at the hypothalamus level by pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone GnRH secretion.

Glycoprotein

Glycoproteins are proteins which contain oligosaccharide chains glycans covalently attached to amino acid side-chains. The carbohydrate is attached to the protein in a cotranslational or posttranslational modification. This process is known as glycosylation. Secreted extracellular proteins are often glycosylated. Carbohydrates are attached to some proteins to form glycoproteins. In proteins that have segments extending extracellularly, the extracellular segments are also often glycosylated.

A glycoprotein is a type of protein molecule that has had a carbohydrate attached to it. The process either occurs during protein translation or as a posttranslational modification in a process called glycosylation. The carbohydrate is an oligosaccharide chain glycan that is covalently bonded to the polypeptide side chains of the protein. Because of the -OH groups of sugars, glycoproteins are more hydrophilic than simple proteins. This means glycoproteins are more attracted to water than ordinary proteins.

Rao Thotakura, Diana L. Chorionic gonadotrophin and pituitary luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone comprise the family of glycoprotein hormones, which regulate major metabolic and reproductive functions of the body. The N-linked oligosaccharides of these hormones are necessary for proper folding, assembly, secretion, metabolic clearance and biological activity.

Acute Phase Proteins. AGP is comprised of amino acid residues and five N-linked oligosaccharides, with a molecular weight of approximately 44 kDa. The biological role of AGP is not completely understood, albeit numerous in vitro and in vivo activities such as the inhibition of platelet aggregation, modulation of lymphocyte proliferation and drug transport, have been reported.
