Saint Peter's Square Wednesday, 16 June Today I would like to continue the presentation of St Thomas Aquinas, a theologian of such value that the study of his thought was explicitly recommended by the Second Vatican Council in two documents, the Decree Optatam totius on the Training of Priests, and the Declaration Gravissimum Educationis , which addresses Christian Education.

Thomas Aquinas was a Dominican priest and Scriptural theologian. Although Thomas authored some works of pure philosophy, most of his philosophizing is found in the context of his doing Scriptural theology. Indeed, one finds Thomas engaging in the work of philosophy even in his Biblical commentaries and sermons. Within his large body of work, Thomas treats most of the major sub-disciplines of philosophy, including logic, philosophy of nature, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophical psychology, philosophy of mind, philosophical theology, the philosophy of language, ethics, and political philosophy. As far as his philosophy is concerned, Thomas is perhaps most famous for his so-called five ways of attempting to demonstrate the existence of God. These five short arguments constitute only an introduction to a rigorous project in natural theology—theology that is properly philosophical and so does not make use of appeals to religious authority—that runs through thousands of tightly argued pages.

Thus Alexander implicitly claims to be repeating some of the absurdities which Aristode had collected in On Ideas. We have no reason to reject his claim; and although he is no doubt paraphrasing rather than quoting, it is reasonable to conclude that in his On Ideas Aristode himself ascribed a theory of forms to Eudoxus. Was this the bizarre theory which Dancy ascribes to him? As far as I can see, the only reason for supposing that Eudoxus took forms to be physical ingredients in things is the fact that Aristotle couples him with Anaxagoras at Met. Aristotle refers slightingly to a theory which explains why, e. Hence we are to infer that Eudoxus also took white--now construed as the form of white--to be a physical stuff.

The Philosophical Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas

Thomas had eight siblings, and was the youngest child. His mother, Theodora, was countess of Teano. Before Saint Thomas Aquinas was born, a holy hermit shared a prediction with his mother, foretelling that her son would enter the Order of Friars Preachers, become a great learner and achieve unequaled sanctity. Following the tradition of the period, Saint Thomas Aquinas was sent to the Abbey of Monte Cassino to train among Benedictine monks when he was just 5 years old. In Wisdom , Saint Thomas Aquinas is described as "a witty child" who "had received a good soul.

Don't have an account? To understand Aquinas on God and evil, it helps to recognize at the outset that his treatment of the matter includes both strictly philosophical elements as well as purely theological ones. People have often asked whether Aquinas was a philosopher or a theologian.
