Oryx and Crake

Susan L. Margaret Atwood has an uncanny sense of timing. Her collection of essays entitled, Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth , was released amidst the current credit crisis and global recession. Among other things, Payback examines the economic, social, and even the environmental consequences of incurring large debts. While she was writing Oryx and Crake , the September 11 attacks occurred, and Atwood has commented on the unease she felt due to the convergence of her fictional world and the real world.

This study provides a postcolonial ecocriticism analysis of a contemporary novel Oryx and Crake by the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, in order to examine the Ecological Imperialism termed by Alfred W. Amidst the massive environmental deterioration there is still unevenness among the people in pre-apocalyptic society. In the need to emphasize the representation of natural disasters that are results of misguided scientific developments and political decisions, this study break down the occurring issues by using the three forms of Ecological Imperialism; biocolonization, dualistic thinking, and environmental racism. All three forms of Ecological Imperialism occurred in the novel and were carried out through the formal elements; setting, main characters and point of view. The representation of the Ecological Imperialism in the novel is carried out through the last man survivor narrative, advancement of technology, and the oppression of the countries in Global South.

“a white illusion of a man”: Snowman, Survival and Speculation in Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake

Oryx and Crake is a novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. She has described the novel as speculative fiction and adventure romance , rather than pure science fiction , because it does not deal with things "we can't yet do or begin to do", [1] yet goes beyond the amount of realism she associates with the novel form. The reader learns of his past, as a boy called Jimmy, and of genetic experimentation and pharmaceutical engineering that occurred under the purview of Jimmy's peer, Glenn "Crake". The book was first published by McClelland and Stewart.

Show all documents Ecocriticism stirs the readers to perceive abandoned lands, for instance, Snowman's "Great Emptiness" Atwood not just as lifeless and desecrate places, however, as those zones that go on to become accustomed and develop - even in "zero hour. Like the land itself, Jimmy embodies the toughness and promise of places considered doomed. The basis for hope in this novel is in place, but not because as one critic suggests, the "elimination of the human race also solves the environmental crisis in one stroke. In its depiction of living from a biocentric viewpoint, Oryx and Crake reminds that place is forever being born.
